Welcome to the Oral History Society
The Oral History Society promotes the collection, preservation and use of recorded memories of the past.
If you are interested in working with oral history you should join the only organisation in Britain and Northern Ireland that supports and debates such activities.
As a member of the Oral History Society you will be:
- Joining a community of oral historians that operate locally and nationally
- Entitled to take part at a reduced rate in a series of highly rated training programmes
- Able to learn and share experiences of good practice in oral history
- Able to engage with current thinking about oral history
- Invited to participate in lively conferences and seminars at discounted rates
- Encouraged to engage with the development of oral history through the Oral History Journal - free to members
- Through all these and other activities informing and shaping the future of oral history
The Oral History Society:
- Encourages people to record their own and other peoples’ life stories
- Offers practical advice and support
- Raises standards in oral history practices across a range of activities
- Facilitates individuals to share ideas, experience and good practice including organising meetings of members through interesting and engaging events
- Provides a voice for oral historians advising and collaborating with national organisations and research councils on oral history
- Provides more than 300 training places each year
- Supports over 40 experienced oral historians as locally based Regional Networkers - a point of contact for anyone interested in oral history
- Provides information on how to get oral history work funded
- Publishes two editions of the Oral History Journal every year
