Internship - My Old China (expenses only position)
Spread the Word, London’s leading writer development agency, has just started work on a new heritage based participatory creative writing project, My Old China.Post duration: 4 months Working hours: 7-14
Funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, this project is an exploration and celebration of the vibrant and colourful past of Lambeth Walk and its immediate environs. Spread the Word has been based on Lambeth Walk since 2004.
In the 19th and early 20th centuries, Lambeth Walk was known across London as a dynamic working class neighbourhood, with a vibrant daily street market (frequented by the Pearly Kings and Queens), a huge variety of shops, including pie & mash shops, and pubs. Industry and housing sat cheek by jowl, and the Doulton Pottery Factory played a crucial role in the employment and identity of the area.
During WW2, this area of London was severely bombed, which brought about the decline of the Lambeth Walk and the surrounding area. New social housing was created, the street market disappeared, shops became vacant, and many of the working class customs and traditions were lost.
My Old China aims to connect together existing archive resources about the area with new, previously unrecorded, oral histories, in order to create opportunities for local people and visitors to engage with the area’s past.
We are seeking an Oral History Intern who will:
Support project staff to recruit volunteer interviewers from the local community
Support project staff in delivering oral history training, using both digital audio and video equipment.
Participate in local history research workshops at the local archives and support volunteers in their local history research.
Carry out any other related activities in community outreach and development.
We are looking for someone who has:
Some experience of oral history theory and practice, either in a community or academic context.
A keen interest in local history and people's lifestories.
Practical skills in community outreach and development and local history research or an interest in developing these skills.
In return we will offer you:
Support and training.
The opportunity to work with a professional writer.
The opportunity to work with a leading Oral Historian.
We are looking for someone who will be able to base themselves on Lambeth Walk for at least one day a week.
