Rotherham’s proud industrial past is set to be celebrated with a very special exhibition which has brought memories of the steel industry back to life.
The Songs of Steel Community Oral History exhibition will be exclusively opening in the Red Hall of Magna on Tuesday June 15. There will be an official opening at 12 noon with speeches and musical performances, as well as the chance to have a free tour of the rest of Magna.
The Songs of Steel Community Oral History Project, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, was initiated in 2009 to collect and record memories of the Rotherham steel industry from ex-steel workers and their families.
The recordings have now been collated for a travelling exhibition which tells the story of the working lives of steelworkers within Rotherham from the 1930s to the present.
There is also a project website, www.songsofsteel.com, and plans afoot to produce a professional musical CD and performance early next year based on the findings. More information will be posted on the website.
The exhibition will continue in the Red Hall at Magna as part of the Children’s Festival until Friday July 9. It will then move to Mowbray Gardens Library from Tuesday July 13 until Monday August 2 and then to Rotherham Central Library from Monday August 8 until Friday August 27.
Project Manager, Sam Smith said: “Collecting the content for this exhibition has been a wonderful experience.
“I have been overwhelmed by the wealth of history which has been uncovered and the amount of Rotherham people who have got in contact with their stories and photographs and those who have written poems and songs for the project.
“It is essential these powerful memories are not lost and can be shared and passed on for future generations.”
Music Co-ordinator, Ray Hearne said “Rotherham was celebrated across the planet as a steel town.
“Before the sense of everything that meant vanished into history, we wanted to invite as many local people as possible to reach down into their memories, hearts and bones for the words, stories and melodies that might give us the feel of that great big, rolling, rumbustious, still echoing in the distance, song of steel.”
Notes to Editors:
Using money raised through the National Lottery, since 1994 the Heritage Lottery Fund has not only revitalised hundreds of museums, parks, historic buildings, landscapes and wildlife sites, but has also given new meaning to heritage itself. People from every walk of life are now involved with the heritage that inspires them, making choices about what they want to keep and share from the past, for future generations. HLF has supported more than 33,900 projects, allocating over £4.4billion across the UK, including £341million to more than 2,500 projects across the Yorkshire and the Humber region alone.
