Volunteer Duties: Liberal Judaism has launched its latest ground-breaking oral history project Lily’s Legacy: The Radical History & Heritage of Liberal Judaism in Britain and now we need your help!

Over the next year, we will record the diverse voices of this movement and map the various existing heritage memorabilia across our communities, examining how Liberal Judaism embodies the vision of its founders – Lily Montagu, Claude Montefiore and Rabbi Dr Israel Mattuck.

Throughout the project – which will run until May 2020 – we’ll be offering a large and diverse number of opportunities to volunteer and get involved. These will include oral history interviewing, transcribing, archive research, audio & video production, exhibition curating and many other roles.

Interviewer Task Description Role: To carry out and process oral history interviews, using a topic guide which will be created as part of the project (during the training provided; this may be optional depending on experience). This may also involve travelling to various parts of the UK to interview participants, but all expenses will be covered, and travelling e.g. outside of London is completely negotiable.

Person Specification: In order to carry out the oral history interviewer role you’ll need: an interest in history & heritage; literacy skills; organisational skills; to demonstrate an interest in equality/diversity and themes around religion/faith/belief; to be able (with training) to use recording equipment; to be able to travel in order to interview. We offer reasonable adjustment.

Time Commitment: flexible
In order to be able to take part in the interviewing part of the project, you must be available for training (*this may be negotiable).

Volunteering period: A minimum of 6 months. The amount of hours you wish to volunteer are negotiable and flexible.
Location: London, UK-wide (optional) or online

Training Opportunities: In return for your time, we can offer free, professional training, and skills-sharing programmes.

In this first project phase, we are looking for enthusiastic and dynamic volunteers to help record and transcribe oral histories from people across Liberal Judaism’s UK communities. All welcome.

In the first training session (1 out of 3), we ‘ll focus on interviewing techniques and ethical considerations. We’ll do some hands-on recording, using the equipment, and create in teamwork interviewing toolkits that are unique to this project. This training is bespoke and thus adequate for all levels.

Training dates are Sunday 24 February and Sunday 17 March (11am – 5pm at the Montagu Centre). Training will be provided by Dr Verusca Calabria.

Other dates and opportunities TBC.

Expenses: travel and other reasonable out-of-pocket expenses.

Closing Date: 17/03/2019
